Please register for courses at least three to four weeks before the session begins. Class
and workshop size ranges between 4 to 15 students and will be filled on a first-come, first-serve
basis. We now accept 15, 16 & 17 year-olds with parental permission. Make-up classes will
be scheduled by individual instructors.

CLAY SCULPTURE
SCULPTING THE HEAD IN CLAY
Instructor: Art Wells
This is a fun, fast paced workshop for beginning to advanced students interested in sculpting the human head. Demonstrations will be given on sculpting male vs. female, differences in age, and differences of various ethnic groups. Students will use each other as models in learning to create a likeness. The projects done in the workshop are only to be considered learning experiences and are not intended to be permanent or fired in a kiln. Armature and tools will be provided for the workshop and will be available for students to purchase. There will be a one-hour break for lunch. Workshop includes a 25 pound bag of modeling clay. Please bring a lunch.

FILMMAKING
ONE-MAN BAND
Instructor: Mark Birnbaum
If you have some production experience and have a camera (or access to one) and would like to develop your production skills, then this workshop is for you. Mark Birnbaum has surfed the crest of a digital wave, producing, shooting and editing mainstream documentaries and independent productions for theatrical, broadcast, festival and educational venues. Along the way he has discovered equipment and developed techniques that can yield surprisingly intimate portraits and revealing stories, marked by a personal stamp of authorship. He will help you navigate the challenges of leaving the crew behind. Day one covers camera, sound, support gear and interview techniques. Examples of Mark's films are screened and discussed. On day two, students hone their skills in the field, shooting an interview and B-roll of a subject in the community,. Later the class meets to screen and discuss the day's footage. Please bering a lunch.

FUSED GLASS
BASIC KILN CASTING AND COLDWORKING
Instructor: Rebecca Romanek Johnson, TA Rosanne Taylor
This workshop will introduce students to kiln casting by building a basic open faced mold using refractory material. Each student will receive a 10x10 glass sheet, a 3-1/2 lb billet, plus 3 lbs cullet. In addition, students will learn basic coldworking skills using equipment such as a belt sander, lap grinder, tile saw, hand grinders and more.

JEWELRY
LOOP-IN-LOOP CHAIN WORKSHOP
Instructor: Patricia Tschetter
Learn how to make elegant yet strong classical chains without solder in fine silver and /or 22kt gold. Your hand-made pendants deserve hand-made chains. Fusing will be emphasized because this skill will help students make better bezels and is a prerequisite for granulation and fine silver enameling. We will be using Jean Stark's book Classical Loop-in-Loop Chains and Their Derivatives extensively in this workshop. Please bring a lunch.

LOST WAX CASTING
Instructor: Rebecca Swann
Through the process of casting, students will be able to produce one-of-a kind jewelry pieces and small sculptures. Once a model is sculpted in wax, it is then put into a metal flask and a fine plaster (investment) is poured around it. After drying, the flask is put into a kiln and the wax is burned out leaving a hollow form in the investment. Silver or bronze is then melted and poured into the form reproducing the orginal wax in metal. Please bring a lunch.

Learn the ins and outs of creating Transfer and Emulsion Lifts using Fuji Film, which is replacing Polaroid film. Students will create one-of-a-kind artworks from their own slides or prints using these techniques. Basic transfer techniques and hand coloring options will be covered. PLEIN AIR FIELD DRAWING

Document the early summer skies, trees, landscape, water, wildlife and plant communities by sketching outdoors at the Dallas Arboretum. This relaxed workshop, in a beautiful setting, welcomes the complete beginner, returning participant, as well as the advanced studio artist curious about the beloved plein air tradition. One-on-one encouraging instruction, individual guided critique, and positive-only end of day group review. (Participants then welcomed to continue working uninstructed until Arboretum close time). Demo in pigment-rich pastels for their depth of color and portability. But all mediums wet and dry are welcome. Focus is "process" over product...learning technique and capturing the essence of time, place and season.

FIBER ARTS
SHIBORI & TIED-RESIST FABRIC DYEING

This form of resist dyeing uses "barriers" of string, rope, rubber bands, clamps and objects to block dyes in selected areas of fabric. These barries create unique patterning and designs that will enhance any garment, sampler pieces or quilting swatches. Students will work in direct application and immersion dyeing and learn methods of folding, dimpling and wrapping fabric to create soft diffused patterning. Cost includes supplies.

Create a fabulous composition starting with 8 X 10 inch fine merino prefelt as your base and adding beautiful hand dyed silks, ribbons, yarns, etc. as embellishments. We will start by needle felting the silks and other textures in place, then lightly wet felt. Your finished pieces will have fantastic texture. The base will be a firm piece of felt that you can further embellish with hand stitching, free motion stitching or beads and use as a focal point for a journal, a wall hanging or just to frame. This is a fun and easy class. Instructor will provide composition ideas. Please bring a lunch.

Working with natural fibers - silk, rayon and cotton - we will learn simple techniques to create marblized, striped, solid and water color effects. Fabric paints, crayons and markers will be used to create details. Please bring an iron and natural fabrics, your scissors and any paints, markers or dye crayons you want to experiment with as well as plastic project buckets and plastic bags to bring wet projects home. GLASS WALL LIGHT WORKSHOP

This four-hour workshop includes a box lunch plus all the supplies needed to create a one-of-a-kind fused glass wall light fixture. No experience necessary. Students will begin with a 4mm sheet of clear glass and custom design it with color and texture using addtional fusible art glass. Students will pick their fused glass sheets at a pre-scheduled date and with instruction, attach it to a light fixture provided. Class is limited to 10 students.

SURFACE DESIGN FOR METAL

Would you like to add gold to your silver designs without breaking the bank? Or change the texture of you jewelry by incorporating granulation or reticulated silver into your work? Would you like to be able to add found objects which cannot be soldered? In this 2 day workshop you will learn keum-boo, a traditional Korean method of adding thin gold to silver. Add texture to you metal by using reticulation silver and granulation. We will also explore ways of adding found objects to metal without solder through rivets,. brads, frames and other methods. SURFACE DESIGN FOR METAL

In this 2 day workshop you will learn keum-boo, a traditional Korean method of adding thin gold to silver. Add texture to your metal by using reticulation silver and granulation. WILD WOMAN DOLL MAKING
Instructor: Valery Guignon
Find you inner intuitive wild self by creating your wild woman doll in this workshop (wild men are welcome as well). You will begin by forming the armature using bendable wire twisted into a stick figure. This can be positioned to sit, stand, lay, kneel, dance or fly. Once shaped, the doll will be fleshed out and dressed in hand-dyed silks, feathers, ribbons and furs. The hands and face will be sculpted in polymer clay which will then be baked and painted and adorned with hair and found objects. It's an amazing process to see her or him come alive! ABSTRACT MOSAIC WORKSHOP

Do you want to push the limits on your design and mosaic skills? Create an abstract mosaic under the watchful eye of award winning designer and professional mosaicist Lynne Chinn, as she navigates you through all of the elements that go into such a project. You will learn how and where to gather your inspiration for abstraction, as well as some advanced design and color theory ideas to contemplate. New techniques will be shared for the cutting and placement of tesserae to add texture, depth, dimension and excitement to all of your work. The mosaic you will be creating in class will be 12" X 12". It will be monochromatic (choose one single color - with light, medium and dark tones). Materials for this project can include one or all of the following: smalti, vitreous glass, stained glass, marble and stone, ceramic and porcelain tile, shell and specialty items. STUDIO LIGHTING & STILL LIFE PHOTOGRAPHY
Instructor: Michael Blackwell
This workshop introduces you to studio lighting. You'll use studio flash and work with models to help develop photography skills using one, two, three and four light sets. We'll begin with camera basics, discuss the three basic lighting sets and expand from there. Participants in this class should get some portfolio level images. Requirements: camera - a digital or film camera that has a manual setting and either a hot shoe or sync cord port. You must be able to adjust the shutter speed and aperture settings. (Please note - Minolta and Sony cameras do not use the standard hot shoe, these camera must use a sync port....check your camera before signing up). A medium zoom lens 18-55 is sufficient, a 55-200 may be better. Skill level - if you can use your camera in the manual exposure mode; change the ISO, shutter speed and aperture settings you have the right skill level. On day two we will explore the lighting techniques for dramatic still life images. We'll work with natural items, jewelry and other objects to produce exciting still life images. Please bring a lunch.

CADDO LAKE NATURE PHOTOGRAPHY WORKSHOP

Caddo Lake is Texas' only natural lake and is one of the best nature photo locations in the state. In the fall we can expect great color, early morning mist on the water and of course, cypress trees covered with hanging moss. We'll meet Friday evening at Caddo Lake State Park for dinner and stay in their cabins. Saturday morning we'll have breakfast together and use our cameras to explore the park and the town of Uncertain. Lunch on your own. Saturday afternoon a guide will take us by boat to some of the better photography sites. Dinner together at the cabins. Breakfast together Sunday morning, then explore the nature trails in the park before heading back home. Uncertain, Texas is about 150 miles east of Dalllas, just north of Marshall, Texas. There are antiques shops in Jefferson, Marshall Pottery is close and Uncertain has a flea market. Shreveport is only about an hour away. Canoe rentals are available in the park and in Uncertain. Workshop includes lodging, park fees, boat tour and 3 meals (provided by the photographer/chef and his supervisor). You must register by October 16 to secure cabins.
