and workshop size ranges between 4 to 15 students and will be filled on a first-come, first-serve
basis. We now accept 15, 16 & 17 year-olds with parental permission. Make-up classes will
be scheduled by individual instructors.

PMC & FUSED GLASS JEWELRY WORKSHOP
Instructor: Cheryl Lucas
Precious Metal Clay is new to the Creative Arts Center of Dallas. Containing particles of pure silver, water and a binder, the process is ceramic, but the outcome is some of the most stunning jewelry you will find. The clay can be molded by hand, with tools or by pressing it into mold and then fired in an electric kiln transforming it into a solid silver object. The fired piece can then be soldered and otherwise treated similarly as manufactured metal. Spend the morning fusing clear and dichroic glass to create beautiful glass cabochons. In the afternoon combine one or more of these cabochons with PMC to create beautiful ready to wear jewelry. Please bring a lunch.

CHAINMAKING

METAL BEAD FABRICATION
Instructor: Rebecca Swann
Working in copper, brass and sterling silver, students can produce beautifully patterned metal beads in a variety of shapes and sizes. Metal will first be rolled in a mill to create surface patterns then cut from the sheet and each half of the bead shaped by dapping or hydraulic pressing. The two halves will be soldered together to create individually formed, handmade beads. No previous metal working experience is required. Metal and tools provided. Please bring a sack lunch.

ENAMELING

In this two-day intensive workshop, you will learn to add fabulous color to your copper or silver designs by applying ground glass and firing the piece in a kiln. The fusing takes only minutes so you can see results quickly. The vivid colors produced can be used to create beautiful jewelry or decorative objects. Learn techniques including sgraffito, stenciling and cloisonne to bring an exciting new element to your work whether it be jewelry, sculpture or mosaics. Tools and enamels are provided. PAINTING PORTRAITS FROM PHOTOGRAPHS

A first-time workshop offering, study with one of America's foremost portrait painters as you learn about the subtleties and nuisances of painting from photographs. You will learn the perils and pitfalls of painting portraits from photos and how to paint what you see. There will also be still-life set-ups for those who prefer not to work from a photo. You will learn about the distortion of the camera, composition, form and how to compensate for the exaggeration of values in the photograph. Prior painting from life is helpful, but not necessary. Please bring several photographs as well as 8"x10" black and white enlargements of the photographs from which you want to work. A supply list will be furnished upon registration. CERAMIC TILE MURAL MAKING
Instructor: Cynthia Padilla
Design, layout, and hand paint a permanent, kiln fired ceramic tile mural. Ideal for a kitchen backsplash, bath, tabletop, fireplace or outdoor garden feature. Beginners welcome as any existing art image can be simply transferred onto the tiles and then painted. Advanced artists working in other media will delight in the translation of their work on to this new surface. At the end of each session we fire what we have painted, allowing your mural as well as your skill level to develop in complexity. This unique workshop topic, rarely taught anywhere in the United States, comes to the Creative Arts Center. Sign up early. Class fee includes paints and tumbled stone tile.

FACES & FEATURES

This workshop will focus on just the features of faces….all different ages, angles and lighting. If one of your weaknesses is a certain feature of the face, then this workshop will give you the opportunity to "woodshed" (or work out the kinks) in your problem areas by not focusing on the whole face, rather its parts. There will be an emphasis on drawing, perspective of the features and then the execution of the different features in either oil or pastel. There will be models in this workshop. CLAY SCULPTURE
MODERN INTERPRETATION OF THE FIGURE

METAL MOBILE MAKING

Come and learn the mechanics and pure joy of making a hanging mobile out of metal. “A mobile is a little private celebration, an object defined by its movement and having no other existence. It is a flower that fades when it ceases to move, a pure play of movement in the sense that we speak of a pure play of light”. (Seuphor.) The basic material will be wire for the structure and anything the student would like to use as shapes for the mobile. Brazing, gluing, shaping, and non-welding attachments will be explored. MIXED MEDIA
CONNECTING THROUGH COLLAGE

This exciting workshop or “art immersion” requires no previous experience, or also can be used by professional artists to revisit issues central to their process. Utilizing found objects, paper, spontaneous painting and other items the process of intuitive work through collage can be used to guide the participant in creating personal and autobiographical objects and stories both linked to the abstract collage. Bring something from home you may want to put in your piece. All other materials, including transfer glue, paint, pencils, decorative paper, photos, mosaic pieces and glass chips are supplied. MOSAICS
MEMORYWARE MOSAIC WORKSHOP

Memoryware mosaic was a popular form of American folk art in the early 1900s. Bottles, jars and vases were covered with putty or cement, broken china, keys, nuts, rocks, buttons, toys or other objects familiar to a person. In this workshop you can create a piece of memoryware to honor a loved one, to celebrate an anniversary or to remember one who has passed on. Bring bits and pieces of things that remind you of the person, place or thing you wish to commemorate of just show up and find what you need and create!

PEBBLE MOSAIC – GARDEN STEPPING STONE PROJECT
Instructor: Karen Gilboux
Create your own garden stepping stone utilizing a pre-cast cement paver and a variety of instructor-supplied pebbles and stone. You will learn how to create pebble mosaics by applying pebbles and other materials directly to your paver utilizing thinset mortar. Be sure to bring other “weatherproof” materials to help you personalize your garden stepping stone. A pattern for the stepping stone can also be supplied if you do not want to create your own design. This one-day workshop also includes a short overview of the history as well as current examples of pebble mosaics.

MOSAIC WITH TEXTURE
Instructor: Karen Gilboux
Texture brings drama, dimensionality and interest to a mosaic. It is introduced to a mosaic by incorporating different types of materials of varying sizes and types. This hands-on workshop begins with a short lecture and demonstration and teaches participants all about texture through creation of a mirror frame. Students learn about adding an almost sculptural quality to their mosaic and are encouraged to bring fun and meaningful items of their own to include in their creations. Small rocks and pebbles, glass, ceramics, shells, 3-dimensional objects such as figurines or special mementos all work great. Materials Note: A small Ikea mirror frame, tile, adhesives and grout will be provided.

ADVANCED MOSAIC WORKSHOP

Explore a new technique or material in this intensive class conducted over 5 days. Choose to work with materials such as vitreous glass, smalti or stone in the direct or indirect method, or propose a special project you've been dreaming about. You'll leave the advanced class with an elevated sense of what mosaic is all about, a new way of thinking about your work and a broader skill set. Discussions and demos cover materials, suppliers and cutting technique. Some prior mosaic experience recommended. POLAROID IMAGES AND EMULSION TRANSFERS

Students will create one-of-a-kind artworks from their own slides or prints using these techniques. Basic transfer techniques and hand coloring options will be covered. CERAMICS
RAKU PARTY

Raku is a post firing technique that creates flashes of metallic colors on the surface of glazed ceramic ware. In this two-day workshop students will create pieces by throwing (if they have prior experience) or handbuilding simple forms the first day. During the second, students will participate in the firing process, clean their pieces and take them home. Keep in mind that raku is not suitable for food. Please bring a lunch.

MAJOLICA GLAZING WORKSHOP - PAINTING ON CLAY
Instructor: Lynn Wilkes Armstrong
Majolica is a traditional Italian pottery technique of painting colored stains onto an unfired white glaze so that the colors fuse into the surface when fired producing a vibrant, permanent, hand-painted work of art. Come translate your painting style onto functional dinnerware. Bring your own handmade low-fire bisque ware or purchse a piece from us - a variety of shapes will be available. You could even make hand-painted kitchen tiles! Learn methods to transfer your own designs onto the surfaces of your pottery and then paint them with ceramic stains to produce translucent watercolor effects. Think how fun it will be to eat off of your own artwork. The design possibilities are endless - landscape, still-life, pet portraits, abstract, realistic or traditional patterns. Come with ideas and will will fire 'em up!

DRAWING
DRAWING FROM NATURE

This class will be taught at the Dallas Arboretum where students will work outside observing and drawing trees, plants and flowers. There will be a demonstration of charcoal drawing techniques, drawing and shading of trees and other landscape details. Students will observe outside lighting and shadows, and shade their drawings showing contrast of light, medium and dark. Students will complete at least two landscape drawings. This class is appropriate for all ages, from teens to seniors. Supply list will be furnished upon registration.

FIBER ARTS
IRRESISTABLE SILK PAINTING
Instructor: Vet
Brilliant color and distinct lines are applied to dyed silk and other fabrics. Serti resist technique allows participants to blend and isolate specific areas with thin line resists. When applied to the fabric, the dye spreads up to the resist, filling in the enclosed space, but going no further. The color is then steamed set to reveal rich, vibrant color on scarves, wraps and other garments. Please bring a pair of sharp scissors and a lunch. Workshop includes all other materials.

DYEING TO DESIGN

This sampler series is just the spark you need to generate luscious hues and spectacular designs. Get introduced to the use of color and design to create patterns by using the resistance dyeing, printing and resist methods. Participants will learn various techniques of knotting, bindings, folding, dipping and pleating that transforms blank fabric into delightful colors and designs.
