CERAMICS

MUGS, JUGS, AND THROWING LARGE
Instructor: Earline Green
This class focuses on beginning and advanced throwing techniques, but handbuilders are also welcome. Students learn at their own pace to throw from the hump, safely increase their centering mass, and create altered wheel thrown forms. We will use stoneware clay, food safe cone 6 oxidation glazes and various alternative firing processes such as raku. Maximum 8 students. The fee includes 25 pounds of clay.

TRADITIONAL COIL POTTERY
Instructor: Earline Green
Inspired by North American indigenous pottery, students will learn to build forms using basic coiling technique. Surface treatments will vary from the black on black technique of Maria Martinez to stamp impressions and the colored slip techniques of Lucy Lewis and the Caddo Indians. The fee includes 25 pounds of clay.

MADE BY HAND
Instructor: Kathy Loucas
You will explore various ceramic handbuilding techniques including pinch, flattened coil, slab and bas relief tiles. Past projects have included vessels, shrines, boxes, tiles and just plain "objects d'art". Tiles would be suitable for counter tops, walls, table insets, fireplaces, backsplashes, etc. No design, drawing or ceramic experience needed. The fee includes 25 pounds of clay.

FIGURATIVE SCULPTURE

This class is for beginners and experienced students interested in the human form as a basis for artistic expression. Working from live models, students will develop their ability to see the complexity of the human form and will discover ways to translate their observations into a sculpture. Students will focus on fundamental ideas of sculpture such as form, volume, gesture, balance, weight, surface, geometry and structure. Students will learn basic properties and possibilities of working with clay and will gain an understanding of constructing armatures and firing finished works.

FINE ART DOLL SCULPTING
Instructor: Lindy Brown
Bring your sculptures to life with the realistic flesh tones of the exciting medium polymer clay! Students will learn how to sculpt one-of-a-kind fantasy feminine figures using polymer clay and natural fibers. Focusing on realism and proportion, this fun clss will cover everything from armatures, sculpting to scale, painting, clothing and wigging. Along the way students will be shown tips and tricks to making their dolls, fairies or mermaids the best that they can be. Everything to make your doll is provided in the materials fee but please bring a good pair of reading glasses for magnification as this class is detail, detail, detail! Enrollment limited to 8 students.

QUICKDRAW

Welcome to the special world of pictorial shorthand. Sketching is a fine art. Improve your power to “speak” clearly and quickly with a pencil and have a ball doing it. We treat sketching as the pathway to learning to draw. Quick drawing is personal, it embraces all styles, from realism to symbolism, caricature to cartooning.

FIBER ARTS

FABRIC DESIGN
Instructor: Valery Guignon
New at the Creative Arts Center is Fabric Design. You will learn a wealth of information about fabric from weave structures to fiber qualities to textures. Explore different dyeing techniques, including direct application, tie-dye, resist, immersion dye, shibouri, scorching, transfer dye and salt effects. You will also learn to properly wash and set colors, how to paint on fabrics and special manipulating techniques, including applique, hand weaving, gluing, etc.

BATIKS AND OTHER RESIST APPLICATIONS
Instructor: Vet
Learn the hot and cold of resist application. After applying thick and thin line resists lines, learn to create the exquisite effect of batik dyeing and wax patterning. Students will become acquainted with the use of color and design to create the unique patterns of batik developed in the Indonesian, Javanese and African tradition. Using resistance dyeing and a few practice sessions, learn to apply wax using the tjanting tool and brush to achieve batik textures. Vet will also reveal the technique of mud-cloth dyeing introduced by the Senufo artisans, as well as, modern water-based resist methods and fixatives.

This is a complete fusing class with an emphasis on technical and artistic possibilities of glass. We start with a review of basic fusing information, firing schedules and glass cutting techniques and then quickly move to individual projects. GLASS BEADMAKING
Instructor: Jane Haspel
In this beginning beadmaking class, you will gain the skills to make a variety of well-shaped beads - round, donut, tube, barrel and bicone. You will learn how to control heat and work with gravity to shape and decorate your beards. You will embellish your beads with frit for an organic look, and with stringer and twisties that you make yourself. You will also learn safety, the different kinds of torches, and the importance of annealing your glass. Enrollment limited to 6 students.

JEWELRY

ADVANCED JEWELRY
Instructor: Rebecca Swann
This class is for students who have completed beginning and intermediate jewelry and are ready to push their design skills to a new level. Continuing jewelry students will learn advanced fabrication techniques such as forging and smithing, reticulation, marriage of metals and enameling.

LOST WAX CASTING
Instructor: Rebecca Swann
Through the process of casting, students will be able to produce one-of-a kind jewelry pieces and small sculptures. Once a model is sculpted in wax, it is then put into a metal flask and a fine plaster (investment) is poured around it. After drying, the flask is put into a kiln and the wax is burned out leaving a hollow form in the investment. Silver or bronze is then melted and poured into the form reproducing the original wax in metal.

WELDED STEEL AND FOUND OBJECT FURNITURE
Instructor: Dan Sellers
In this advanced class you will learn to build your own furniture using welded steel and found objects, including one-of-a-kind lamps, candle holders, wall hangings and furniture for your home and outdoors. In addition to arc welding, you will have the opportunity to learn to use a plasma torch and mig welder. Never miss a holiday or birthday gift - create them yourself! Class will include a trip to the junk yard to search for materials for your creations. A basic knowledge of welding is required for this class, as well as all welding safety equipment.

ART OF MOSAIC USING STAINED GLASS

Come experience the beauty and fun of stained glass mosaics. In this class students will make mosaic panels with stained glass as the primary mosaic material. Instruction will focus on composition, glass cutting & breaking techniques. Students will explore depth and shading techniques for glass so that a painting-like effect can be achieved. Students may use their own design or one of the furnished patterns. The panels and some stained glass are furnished. Please bring safety glasses and glass cutters. Additional materials will be discussed at the first class. No previous mosaic experience is required. Minimum registration is 5 students.

OIL PAINTING FROM LIFE

Traditional oil techniques are taught with the focus on learning to paint nude and costumed models by exploring the human form and fabric. ABSTRACT PAINTING
Instructor: Robert Moore
Work through a variety of highly effective exercises and activities that spur the imagination and capture new ideas as you paint from your dreams and imagination. The canvas is your stage and your sanctuary. In this class, we will explore contemporary painting methods such as abstract, field of color, cubism, expressionism and conceptual art. Using oil or acrylic, novice and pro may discover the power of gesture, color, chance and your creative attitude. Make music and poetry with paint.

DIGITAL PHOTOGRAPHY – LEVEL I

In this 8-week class you will learn to use your digital camera. We'll begin with the basics then advance to using the various functions of your equipment. The class will cover camera operations, terms and terminology of photography, composition, flash photography and introduce you to Adobe Photoshop. We'll learn about printing digital images and how to matt/mount and frame in a hands-on exercise. Weekly assignments will challenge our new skills. Limit 12 students. Must be 18 years or older.

PRINT MAKING

EXPLORING THE RELIEF PRINT
Instructor: Terri Thoman
This easy to carve material allows the exploration of the relief print. We will start with a one color simple block while learning to transfer the design, carve, register and print the image. Then moving into multiple color images and creating an edition of your work. Beginning and intermediate printers. All participants will take part in a print exchange. It's fun and inspiring. STONE

STONE SCULPTING
Instructor: Art Wells
All techniques of stone carving and sculpting will be covered in this course. Class covers the proper use of hand tools, diamond grinders, and pneumatic tools. Finishing and polishing techniques will also be discussed. Beginning and experienced artists interested in figurative as well as abstract forms learn to translate their ideas into stone. Students learn to move from the technical, thinking aspect of being a stone carver, to the non-thinking, creative aspect of becoming a sculptor.

An investigation of drawing mediums and techniques inspired by the Great Masters of landscape, seascape, abstract, floral, interior, portraiture and still life painting. In Quick Draw we actually slow down and learn to make the shift in our brains to see more accurately, which is a direct window to greater creativity and artistic confidence. GLASS BEADMAKING

In this beginning beadmaking class, you will gain the skills to make a variety of well-shaped beads - round, donut, tube, barrel and bicone. You will learn how to control heat and work with gravity to shape and decorate your beards. You will embellish your beads with frit for an organic look, and with stringer and twisties that you make yourself. You will also learn safety, the different kinds of torches, and the importance of annealing your glass. Enrollment limited to 6 students.

LOST WAX CASTING
Instructor: Rebecca Swann
Through the process of casting, students will be able to produce one-of-a kind jewelry pieces and small sculptures. Once a model is sculpted in wax, it is then put into a metal flask and a fine plaster (investment) is poured around it. After drying, the flask is put into a kiln and the wax is burned out leaving a hollow form in the investment. Silver or bronze is then melted and poured into the form reproducing the original wax in metal.

JEWELRY BASICS

Students new to jewelry will learn basic techniques including wire working, sawing and piercing sheet metals, soldering, bezel setting and riveting. Students with jewelry experience will be able to work on more elaborate designs and learn a few new techniques. Die forming, hinge construction and prong settings for faceted stones will be offered for the intermediate students. Supplies and tools needed will be discussed on the first day of class.

WELDED STEEL AND FOUND OBJECT FURNITURE

In this advanced class you will learn to build your own furniture using welded steel and found objects, including one-of-a-kind lamps, candle holders, wall hangings and furniture for your home and outdoors. In addition to arc welding, you will have the opportunity to learn to use a plasma torch and mig welder. Never miss a holiday or birthday gift - create them yourself! Class will include a trip to the junk yard to search for materials for your creations. A basic knowledge of welding is required for this class, as well as all welding safety equipment.
