CERAMICS
MUGS, JUGS, AND BUILDING LARGE
Instructor: Earline Green
This class focuses on beginning and advanced throwing techniques, but handbuilders are also welcome. Students learn at their own pace to throw from the hump, safely increase their centering mass, and create altered wheel thrown forms. We will use stoneware clay, food safe cone 6 oxidation glazes and various alternative firing processes such as raku.

THE ART OF CERAMICS
Instructor: Lynn Wilkes Armstrong
Students will investigate new ways of creating sculptural or functional ceramic forms. Basic as well as advanced techniques for hand building and wheel throwing will be covered. Students will explore ways of working with slabs, coils, and wheel thrown techniques using stoneware or porcelain clay bodies. Glaze emphasis is on classic high fire reduction glazes with an option for experimenting with raku firing.

MADE BY HAND
Instructor: Kathy Loucas
You will explore various ceramic handbuilding techniques including pinch, flattened coil, slab and bas relief tiles. Past projects have included vessels, shrines, boxes, tiles and just plain "objects d'art". Tiles would be suitable for counter tops, walls, table insets, fireplaces, backsplashes, etc. No design, drawing or ceramic experience needed.

CLAY SCULPTURE
CREATIVE CLAY SCULPTING
Instructor: Glo Coalson
Students will learn the materials and techniques to sculpt any 3-dimensional figure they can imagine or see. Subjects can include animals, photographs, sketched ideas, or wherever your inspiration takes you. Water-based and oil-based clays will be introduced and instruction will include armatures and 3-dimensional design. The class is designed for all skill levels and each student will receive individualized instruction specific to their project.

SCULPTING THE HEAD IN CLAY
Instructor: Art Wells
Let’s take a journey through the creative process to bring forth from your imagination a head sculpted in clay. Learn to see what we have always looked at in new ways. What makes a face beautiful or ordinary? What makes it feminine or masculine? What about ethnic distinctions? What’s the difference between sculpting a head or sculpting a portrait? You will be provided with the support structure for your sculpture as well as 25lbs of clay. Please bring one rag or towel approximately 12” x 18” and one plastic bag approximately 15” deep.

CONTEMPORARY CLAY SCULPTURE

Students will explore the basics of form, design and the application of various hand-building techniques using a live model. The class is for all skill levels and each student will try several techniques in the construction of their sculptures revolving around a central theme, issue or concept. DRAWING FROM THE MASTERS
Instructor: Cynthia Padilla
An investigation of drawing mediums and techniques inspired by the Great Masters of landscape, seascape, abstract, floral, interior, portraiture and still life drawing. Produce a body of work in the mediums of graphite pencil, colored pencil, hard and soft pastel, pastel pencils, conte, ink and mixed media combinations. In the time-honored method of The Masters, you begin via a simple gridded sketch.... so even complete beginners emerge with frameable work each afternoon! Daily lecture, demo of technique, 1 on 1 guidance, positive group critique and video-supported instruction in an encouraging atmosphere. Consider signing up for the companion painting course immediately before.

TEEN PORTRAIT CLASS
Instructor: Anne Weary
For this class only, we will take teens 13 and up, and provide an opportunity for students to work with other teens to draw portraits of live models. From observation, students will practice drawing individual facial features. After careful observartion, they will outline their portrait composition and shade it with charcoal showing contrast of light, medium and dark shades. Young artists will complete a straight on, profile and three-quarter portrait drawing. Minimum of 4 students required.

THE HUMAN FORM

The human body is so intricate and fascinating that it can be studied for a life time. This is an ongoing class that will explore the different aspects of the human form. You may study the hands, the face or maybe just a shoulder. Come and have fun capturing the body in gesture and learn to see the planes of the body. The human form is the most interesting still life and landscape there is because it is always changing, always different. Some drawing experience necessary.

OBSERVATIONAL DRAWING: THINGS AND PLACES

In this class students will work from observation, looking closely at various things and places. Using charcoal and graded pencils, participants will explore different drawing techniques. Students will examine these ‘things and places’ as a means to help develop an understanding of basic drawing vocabulary, such as line, composition, volume, tone, shape and perspective. Working from observation, students will develop their ability to see the complexity of the world around them and discover ways to translate their observations into the world of drawing.

FIBER ARTS
FABRIC DESIGN
Instructor: Valery Guignon
New at the Creative Arts Center is Fabric Design. You will learn a wealth of information about fabric from weave structures to fiber qualities to textures. Explore different dyeing techniques, including direct application, tie-dye, resist, immersion dye, shibouri, scorching, transfer dye and salt effects. You will also learn to properly wash and set colors, how to paint on fabrics and special manipulating techniques, including applique, hand weaving, gluing, etc.
